‘Bhopali’ film screenings across U.S.

Today, March 30, in Baltimore, and continuing through April 7 to Berkeley, the documentary Bhopali is touring to raise awareness and support. Max Carlson's award-winning film explores the ongoing legacy of the Bhopal disaster and features Indian and international activists, including Noam Chomsky. You may view the dramatic trailer and get tour details from Students for Bhopal.

Sanjay Verma, sole survivor of one of the thousands of families wiped out in the 1984 Bhopal pesticide plant explosion, appears in the film. He is traveling across the U.S. to speak and answer questions at the screenings.

Sanjay began his journey in West Virginia two weeks ago, where he was scheduled to testify for a local residents’ suit to block Bayer CropScience from resuming production of methyl isocyanate (MIC, the chemical responsible for 1984 disaster in India) at Bhopal's sister plant in Institute, WV. In a surprise victory for public safety, on March 18 Bayer caved to community demands to halt manufacturing of the deadly chemical, meaning they also will not produce aldicab, an acutely toxic pesticide manufactured with MIC. (Aldicarb, responsible for the worst North American poisoning incident ever, is being phased out in the U.S. following a 2010 EPA finding that is too dangerous to use.)

Join us» Following Baltimore, Bhopali and Sanjay will appear in New York City on March 31; Medford, MA on April 4; and Los Angeles on April 6. PAN is co-sponsoring the April 7 Berkeley event from 6-9 pm at Boalt Hall, Room 105, on the UC Berkeley campus. If you live in the Bay Area, please join us.
