For the love of bees & PAN
Smock, an artisan letterpress based in Syracuse, NY, has created unique, honey bee-inspired cards...for PAN!
These cards are part of Smock's “change the world” card series, where 100% of profits are donated to a critical environmental issue.
The cheery "Sunflower" cards — sustainably letterpressed on bamboo paper — offer a beautiful way for members to spread the word about the ways in which pesticides are putting bees in peril. Why bamboo? In addition to not requiring pesticides or fertilizer to grow, bamboo reaches its mature harvestable height in 3-5 years (versus 10-20 years for most softwoods). Bamboo generates up to 35% more oxygen than hardwood trees, and absorbs four times as much carbon as hardwood. Bamboo can detoxify wastewater (due to its high nitrogen consumption) and improve soil quality. If that wasn’t enough, bamboo also has natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties too.
Why bees? Because honey bees are responsible for pollinating one in three bites of food we eat, and they're in trouble. In recent years they've been dying off in droves, party due to increased exposure to pesticides and loss of habitat. Planting bee-friendly plants (like sunflowers) is one thing you can do to support healthy bees.
Smock was founded by long-term PAN friends and supporters Harold Kyle and Debbie Urbanski. They made their first PAN-branded card — "Spring" — in 2010 and recently contributed bee-themed bookmarks.
In support of PAN's honey bee campaign once again, Smock is contributing 100% of the profits from sales of the limited edition Sunflower cards. Order your cards today!
