Vanishing of the Bees

Vanishing of the Bees is a new feature-length documentary exploring colony collapse disorder, and with any luck it’s playing soon at a theatre near you.

Although the issue is less covered than in years past, honeybee populations continue to die off at alarming rates each winter, as they have done since around 2006 when colony collapse disorder was first observed and named. What makes this film special is the commitment of the filmmakers to using Vanishing of the Bees as a platform for organizing change. Stepping away from the standard distribution deals that would constrict the film’s uses, the filmmakers have instead made the film available for teachers, advocates and everyday people to host screenings.

About the film: Vanishing of the Bees successfully ties in educational components by laying out the historical significance of bees as well as the work they perform in keeping foods like almonds and stone fruits in our stores and on our plates. (Factoid: Bees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food.) Viewers get to know the quirky personalities of beekeepers from around the world who find themselves on the frontlines of an urgent battle to protect the endangered honeybees and maintain their livelihoods. We also get a glimpse into hive life, coming away feeling a sense of intimacy with these noble and necessary creatures.

PAN, along with Beyond Pesticides, the American Beekeeping Federation, Slow Food USA and a host of other allied organizations have partnered with Vanishing of the Bees to get the word out. This is your invitation to join us.
