PANNA: Líderes Campesinas

Líderes Campesinas

Organización en California de Líderes Campesinas, Inc. (Líderes Campesinas) is a culmination of decades of work by farmworker women who have been leaders of grassroots efforts to improve the lives of farmworker communities throughout California. Líderes Campesinas provides these leaders and activists with the opportunity to coordinate their work and to give farmworker women a more effective unified voice. The group's organizers work throughout the state educating women farmworkers about pesticides, domestic violence and the AIDS virus. Through involvement in local, regional and national public hearings and direct actions, Líderes Campesinas has brought national and international attention to the plight of farmworker women.

Líderes Campesinas has taken the lead in providing training for farmworkers on the U.S. Worker Protection Standards. Over the past few years, the group has held pesticide training workshops for farmworker women throughout rural California. The year-long Farmworker Health & Safety Campaign in 1994 provided direct outreach and education to farmworkers on pesticide safety. Líderes also provides support for farmworkers who have been poisoned by pesticides by helping them file reports and finding medical and legal assistance.

The group also coordinates a program that focuses on preventing domestic violence and sexual assault. Farmworker women are trained on different ways to respond to domestic violence and to find solutions to end the cycle of violence. The women who are trained then return to their communities where they train other farmworker women in these methods.

In 1997, Líderes launched the Economic Development Project to work with service providers and community-based organizations to teach farmworker women new job-related skills so that they can qualify for permanent jobs at higher wages. Another project trains farmworker women about AIDs treatment and prevention.

Líderes Campesinas has 15 groups of farmworker women who work in the fields, packing houses, nurseries and other agricultural work places.
