California, 6 other states challenge EPA over farm pesticide

Attorneys general of California and six other states accused federal environmental chief Scott Pruitt on Tuesday of acting illegally and dangerously when he refused to ban a widely used farm pesticide that had been withdrawn from household use after research indicated potential health hazards.

The Environmental Protection Agency under President Barack Obama had proposed in November 2015 to prohibit all use of chlorpyrifos, saying it could no longer conclude that the chemical was safe. Environmental groups had sought agency action since 2007, saying studies showed the pesticide caused brain damage in animals and possibly in newborn children, and a federal appeals court in San Francisco said the EPA’s own scientists had found likely dangers to human health.
