How your donation helps
A donation to PANNA advances alternatives to pesticides worldwide. We focus on pesticides because their use is connected to larger issues -- human and environmental health, resource exploitation for corporate profit, control of the food supply and local sovereignty and human rights. Your dollars are used to fight for food security, social justice, and ecological sustainability -- at local, national and international levels.
Your support keeps PANNA strong and independent. We get maximum impact by globally linking the work of many organizations while remaining sensitive to the diverse local situations in which pesticides are used and abused. Every project is a joint venture, and a third or more of total income is redistributed to partner groups. Our major campaigns are carried out through broad coalitions, involving people working on the wider range of issues. Examples include the International POPs Elimination Network (fighting for a strong UN treaty to ban persistent organic pollutants); the U.S.-based Genetically Engineered Food Alert (which exposed "StarLink" corn and regulatory failure, and led to a recall of more than 300 corn products); Californians for Pesticide Reform (140 groups who recently won a "Healthy Schools Bill"); and a network that has improved World Bank accountability for least-toxic pest management in agricultural projects.
The targets of our work range from international treaties banning the most hazardous pesticides to consumer and farmer education about alternatives. We measure our progress by several standards, including: Are all affected parties -- especially small farmers, farm labor and the most disempowered communities -- engaged in identifying problems, solutions and strategies? What positive policy changes have we won? Is pesticide use increasing or decreasing? Are effective alternatives being adopted? What do these indicators tell us about the next actions needed?
Regional work is reviewed by our North America Networking Council, 15 individuals representing organizational Affiliates in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Detailed program planning and evaluation is carried out by staff in consultation with the Council, other Affiliates and our Board of Directors. The Board has ultimate responsibility for approving long range strategies and budgets, as well as assessing organizational performance.
Most important, if you join PANNA through a donation, we keep you informed, via the Web, email action alerts, regular newsletters and reports, and provide you with analysis of how your money is put to work and additional opportunities to stay involved.
