*Methyl Bromide Alternatives for North African and Southern European Countries, 2000* United Nations Publications. Compilation of information discussed at a 1998 workshop on methyl bromide alternatives. North African and Southern European case studies examine possible alternatives to methyl bromide (MB) in soil fumigation, control of plant-parasitic nematodes and soil-borne pathogens resistance. Demonstrates that alternatives exist for every use of MB in soil fumigation. Discusses how farmer support is needed to phase out MB and that an MB phase out will lead to an increase in sustainable approaches to agriculture as well as an international economic incentive for organic agriculture. 244 pp. US$40. *Inventory of Technical and Institutional Resources for Promoting Methyl Bromide Alternatives, 1999* Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) and United Nations Environment Programme Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP TIE). Directory designed to assist developing countries in phasing out methyl bromide (MB) and adopting alternatives. Lists institutions from around the world with agricultural experience relevant to use of MB as a soil fumigant. Organizations featured may be directly involved in promoting alternatives to MB, promoting agricultural techniques useful in replacement of MB, or involved in collaborative project design or agricultural policy analysis. Includes country, organizational and key word indices. 96 pp. US$10 (free to educational institutions, non-governmental and non-profit organizations). Available to download at . *Towards Methyl Bromide Phase Out: A Handbook for National Ozone Units, 1999* Melanie Miller. Handbook written for National Ozone Units in government departments responsible for implementing control measures under international ozone protection treaty–the Montreal Protocol. Provides seven steps to facilitate national elimination of methyl bromide (MB)–from assessing MB use and identifying and implementing alternatives to establishing a policy framework and raising public awareness. Features successful examples from around the world. 37 pp. Download for free at Contact UNEP TIE OzonAction Programme, Tour Mirabeau 39-43 quai André Citroën 75739 Paris Cedex 15, France; phone (33-1) 44-37-14-50; fax (33-1) 44-37-14-74; email; Web site

*Alternatives to Methyl Bromide: IPM in Flour Mills–Comparison of a Norwegian and Danish Mill, 2000* Sejero Nielson. Study compares the Danish and Norwegian flour mill systems. The Danish mill uses integrated pest management (IPM) and an alternative to methyl bromide (MB); the Norwegian mill also uses IPM but continues to use MB. Concludes that IPM is a practical alternative to systems including MB fumigation. 35 pp. US$8. *Protecting the Ozone Layer, 1998* United Nations Environment Programme Industry and Environment. Provides scientific explanation of how methyl bromide (MB) depletes ozone layer and explains significance of the Montreal Protocol. Details current uses of MB, as well as current emissions rate. Proposes steps to phase-out MB by 2005 in developed world and 2015 in the developing world by implemention of alternatives to MB and reevaluation of contemporary use of soils, durables, perishables, structures and transport vehicles. 35 pp. Free.
