This week PAN released Honey Bees and Pesticides: State of the Sciencea 22-page report on the factors behind colony collapse disorder (CCD) with a sustained focus on the particular role of pesticides. 

By collecting and presenting the findings of dozens of peer-reviewed scientific studies — including a series of damning studies published in the last year — we hope to provide concerned citizens and decisionmakers alike with a point of reference in the heated public debate over what is causing our pollinators to die off at unprecedented rates. All of the studies presented are annotated and most are linked so readers can explore the state of the science for themselves.

The science linking CCD and pesticides is complex, but it is not unclear.

I am beekeeper and I do not believe the good scientific studies link CCD to pesticides. Of course insecticides kill bees, always have and always will. After all they are only insects, not some noble creature. We depend on them to pollinate our food and provide honey. But to blame all bee losses on pesticides is ridiculous.

When you read the report you will see that it is a combination of multiple factors, including nutritional deficiency caused by habitat loss, as well as pathogens and pesticides. And these factors affect each other. Pesticides contribute to habitat loss, which leads to nutritional deficiency, which leads to weaker immunity, which allows pathogens to attack. It isn't just insecticides, but herbicides that kill the plants that the bees depend on for nutrition.
