This is a repost of a blog originally published by our partners at PAN Asia Pacific, co-written by Ilang-Ilang Quijano, Communications Officer and Diana Bando, Food Sovereignty Programme Assistant. The Government of India’s move to undermine the rights of the farmers by passing three new farm laws has sparked a massive farmers’ movement. Legislation that would give corporations more control over the food system—in line with the neoliberal restructuring of agriculture—has pushed Indian farmers, their families and supporters to flock to state borders, staging protests and sit-ins,... The first few weeks of 2021 have been an incredible ride. As the Bernie meme makes its final rounds after last week’s inauguration, I’m inspired to throw a few reflections into the rhetorical ring.  As we noted often during last year’s fraught election season, democracy is critical to our work here at PAN, so the fact that our democratic institutions ultimately held — despite a violent attempted coup — is a very good thing for us all.  Yes, democracy needs tending One of the few positive outcomes of all the suffering, incompetence, and corruption we’ve seen over the past four... This is the time of year on our farm that we reflect on our past growing season and consider the take-aways we can use going forward. We work hard to accept the lessons that came with failures and resolve our feelings connected to loss. We also highlight the things that went well, and give them equal footing to provide ourselves a healthy balance for the future. We combine the knowledge of our experience with the picture we have painted for ourselves of what the perfect growing season on the very best version of our farm would look like. This future vision is our guiding star that helps us... Read More

In a huge win for small farmers and Native communities, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador closed out 2020 by issuing a decree that will phase out the use of the herbicide glyphosate and genetically modified (GM) corn in the country by 2024. Glyphosate on the chopping block This official decree comes after the President’s August 2020 announcement that the country planned to phase out glyphosate gradually, citing that an immediate ban would impact food output. The order was activated on January 1, 2021, and gives private companies until January 2024 to replace glyphosate with... Read More
