PAN condemns January 6 attack, joins widespread calls for accountability

On January 6, a mob of white nationalists attacked and occupied the United States Capitol in Washington, DC, in an effort to block the ceremonial counting of electoral college votes in the presidential election. This direct attack on democracy was openly encouraged and incited by the outgoing president and his enablers.

PAN’s Executive Director Kristin Schafer released the following statement:

PAN joins social justice organizations across the country in calling on Congress and appropriate agencies to hold those involved in this failed insurrection fully accountable, including the immediate removal or resignation of the outgoing president, who is clearly a continued security threat.

Yesterday, an angry mob of armed white supremacist vigilantes overran our Capitol, with minimal resistance and repercussions from law enforcement officials. In contrast, over and over we’ve seen police target, detain and even kill Black people protesting for justice.

As a country, we can’t minimize what happened yesterday. We can’t look the other way. Our political leaders must take bold action to hold the enablers of this attack to account. The true democracy we all strive for is at stake — and as we saw yesterday, this is not an abstract or theoretical threat.
