Food Justice: Honoring our Roots & Growing the Movement

Join us at the Food Security 15th Annual Conference in Oakland from November 4-8. The conference will be held at the Oakland Marriott, 1001 Broadway, Oakland, CA.

This year’s conference theme is Food Justice: Honoring our Roots, Growing the Movement. Register now for 5 exciting and inspiring days of field trips, plenary presentations, hands-on workshops, “food movies,” prize ceremonies and more. 

Free event: Family farmer panel

In conjunction with the conference, PAN and National Family Farm Coalition have co-organized a family farmer panel which will be hosted by San Francisco State University. This is one of the many free events open to the public and we hope to see you there!

Farmer Voices from Across the Country: Fighting for Justice and Fairness on the Farm.
Tuesday Nov 8, 7-9 pm; San Francisco State University, Humanities Bldg, Room 587

Come hear George Naylor, Iowa corn farmer whose story is told in Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma; Montana farmer Dena Hoff, Via Campesina North America co-chair; dairy farmer Joel Greeno, who led the tractor-cade during the Madison protests, and Bob St. Peter, who organizes the landless in Maine. These farm leaders will share stories about their work in their communities, and nationally and internationally for food sovereignty and a sustainable, fair food system.

Food Sovereignty Prize Ceremony

Another free public event at the conference venue will be the Food Sovereignty Prize Award Ceremony and Fair, on Sunday November 6, from 4-7 pm. CFSC’s 3rd Annual Food Sovereignty Prize will be awarded to Brazil’s Landless Workers Movement (MST). Honorable mentions will be awarded to Campesino a Campesino Movement (Mexico), Grow BioIntensive Agricultural Centre of Kenya, and South Central Farmers(US). In addition to prize winners, former members of the Black Panther Party will speak. The Fair will include discussion circles with prize winners, a seed swap and information from the U.S. Food Sovereignty Alliance (of which PAN is a founding member) and other groups.

Building food democracy:  bridging urban and rural realities
Monday, Nov 7, 1:30-3 pm; Oakland Marriott, Room 210

How can the urban food and rural farm justice movements work together to achieve a fair and sustainable food system? Hear the lived experiences and campaign stories of leaders of these movements! Together we’ll explore how to build movement power and meaningful bridges that cross rural-urban, race, class, gender, age and geographic divides to transform U.S. agri-food policy.

Farmers Occupy! Reclaiming rights to seeds, land & farming
Sunday, November 6 , 2:15-3:45 pm, Oakland Marriott, Room: Junior 3

Transnational corporations are grabbing land and seeds, and tightening their grip over food and farming systems in the U.S. and around the world. But farmers and rural communities — from California to Cameroon — are fighting back and mobilizing to defend their rights. Come hear the stories of local farmers and global activists; learn how to support U.S. and global food sovereignty campaigns with concrete actions!

Fair Trade – Certification for Fair Labor, Food Safety and Environmental Sustainability
Monday, November 7 10:00-11:30 am, Oakland Marriott, Junior 1

The rising popularity of organic and fair trade products reflects growing consumer demand to “shop our values.” We’ll discuss how to create domestic fair trade and innovative projects that provide a voice for workers from seed to table while also allowing access for all to nutritious, culturally appropriate, locally grown food.
